The chiropractic the adjustment is built around relieving the sympathetic nervous system. Your sympathetic nervous system is the fight or flight part of your autonomic nervous system. Imagine if you were on a hike and you saw a bear, your body already knows what to do and before you know it your legs are moving and you will be running without even thinking about it. This is what your sympathetic nervous system was made to do! When this is “on '' all of the time (which is the case for most of us), you are always left feeling stressed, fatigued, tense, noticeable neck and shoulder tightness, sensitivity to light and sound, poor sleep, digestive issues, and other side effects which creates a negative environment for your body to live in. Each and every adjustment should help turn “off” your sympathetic nervous system and allow your parasympathetic nervous system to take over more. This part of your autonomic nervous system includes resting and relaxing, better nights sleep, better digestion and a healthier environment for your body to live in.
The chiropractic adjustment is intended to restore joint motion. When a joint in your body doesn't quite achieve its normal range of motion, I, as your Chiropractor, use force to restore that joint's full range of motion. It's important to know that I have extensive training and use my hands as the external force as well as the rest of my body. Other tools that I may also use is my table which has drops specifically designed to work as a lever to get your joint to move, this tool may not feel as dramatic but it’s just as effective. I also have a tool called the activator, this little gun sounds like a stapler and some patients also like to joke that im “stapling their body back together with it”. This tool is very specific and helps with small joints in the body, it is highly effective and sometimes the more appropriate and preferred method of adjusting. Not one body on this earth is the same so neither is the adjustment, and most important, your one body may look completely different each visit you come in! It’s important to realize this because each visit together may be different, some may be longer, some may be shorter. There is no way to find out until I’m able to access your body to find out what it needs!
For everyone and anyone who is living an breathing. It's critical to get adjusted regularly to assess where your hips are, and how your body is positioned. Our bodies are so intelligent that we find ways to compensate for old injuries without ever consciously making the decision to do so. Do me a favor, stand in the mirror and place your hand on your hips. Start from your armpit until you feel those big bones on your sides that sway when you hula-hoop. Now look in the mirror, do your hands look like they are evenly on the same spot on both sides of your body? What about your shoulders? Does it feel like one side is a bit higher than the other? When you go to do a squat or any other functional movement, if your hips are all over the place or “unstable”, you’re naturally putting more weight on one side of your body than the other. This is why it's important to see your chiropractor even though you might not be in pain.Other than all of those awesome things already listed, chiropractic care has been shown to help lower back pain, sciatica, neck pain, muscle pain, headaches , TMJ disorders, improved posture, and more! My goal as your Chiropractor is to empower you, educate you and give you all the resources you need in order for you to truly be healthy. Let me take care of you, so that way you have the power to take care of everything else.
The popping or crack-like sound you may hear during the adjustment is the release of gas that gets built up between your joints. When a joint moves due to muscle tension, a small little pocket of air builds in that space and when that space is closed the air releases and makes a “pop” sound similar to bubble wrap. It's also important to know that each adjustment is different and you may not always hear that “pop” sound, but joint motion is still restored.
We believe that nerve irritation can be cause by three factors.
First visits are FUN!. The first visit we will have an in depth conversation about your health history, see how your body moves, find out about any surgeries that you have had, ask about any medications you are taking, discover any aches and pains that you deal with and most importantly it’s an open door and opportunity for you to tell me what you want me to hear. The more you tell us, the better we can treat you and get you back to meeting your goals. After we've done all the talking I will begin my exam. The exam will be a series of orthopedic tests specific to what you have going on, there may be some neurological tests that we perform, range of motion assessments or I may ask you to show me a dynamic movement such as a squat, and sometimes we will do a specific muscle test. It’s important that while doing all these tests, if anything ever causes you to have pain, tell me! After all that fun I will ask you to lie belly-down on the table. (Don't worry if you're pregnant my table is able to move to support your stomach and allow you to lay face down) This is where I use my hands and continue the exam. Based on that history and exam, this will vary from patient to patient, you may receive an adjustment or I may send you home with some homework and ask for you to come back for the adjustment a different day. Remember every-BODY is different!
Babies and kids have nervous systems too! The adjustment for babies and kids is different than a typical adult adjustment and incredibly gentle. Reasons that we see babies and kids include stressful births, torticollis or "wry neck", recurring ear infections, colic, bed wetting and so much more. If you have any specific questions, ask us next time you're in!
We do not take x-rays at your first visit. We take the time to analyze how your body functionally moves on your first visit and the Doctor will decide what is necessary. If you have any previous X-rays they are always helpful to bring with you to your appointment!
